Mats FAQ
Types of Martial Arts Mats
Types of Martial Arts Mats
- Puzzle Mats: Puzzle mats are the most economical and versatile option. These mats are made from interlocking foam pieces, making them easy to set up and dismantle. They are perfect for dojos that need to frequently change their layout or for those with irregularly shaped training spaces. Puzzle mats offer sufficient cushioning for various martial arts practices and are a cost-effective solution for home or commercial gyms. You can explore Hatashita's range of puzzle mats here.
- Tatami Mats: Tatami mats provide a no-slip surface with excellent shock absorption, making them ideal for martial arts that involve throws and takedowns, such as judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). These mats mimic the traditional Japanese tatami flooring, offering a firm yet cushioned training surface. Tatami mats are known for their durability and longevity, essential for dojos with heavy daily use. Hatashita offers high-quality tatami mats, which you can find here.
- Roll Mats: Roll mats are a great solution for larger training spaces and competitions. These mats are easy to roll out and store, providing a seamless, cushioned surface ideal for high-impact martial arts. Roll mats are typically used in larger dojos and for events due to their portability and ease of installation. For a premium option, check out the Dollamur Flexi-Roll mats available at Hatashita here.

When selecting a mat, several factors should be considered:
- Firmness: Mats should provide a stable surface for footwork while offering enough give to cushion falls.
- Cushioning: Adequate padding is essential to prevent injuries from falls and high-impact moves.
- Durability: High-quality mats should withstand regular use and last for years without significant wear and tear.
- Ease of Installation and Storage: Especially important for dojos that need to reconfigure their space regularly.
How do I properly clean my mats?
How do I properly clean my mats?
Mats can be appropriately cleaned using our Spectro Sept Multi-Purpose Mat Cleaner. Please note that this is primarily a disinfectant, and for best results, leave the diluted cleaner on the mats for 10 minutes to allow for sufficient time to kill bacteria, viruses and fungi. Always follow the instructions on the label.
Remove debris: Sweep or vacuum loose dirt, chalk, or dust
Prepare cleaning solution:
- Mild dish soap + warm water (or a gentle disinfectant safe for mats)
- Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach
Wipe or mop:
- Use a soft cloth, sponge, or mop.
- Focus on areas of high contact.
Rinse lightly:
- Use a damp cloth or mop with clean water to remove soap residue.
Dry:
- Air dry or towel dry. Make sure mats are completely dry before rolling or stacking.
Important: Always avoid excess moisture on your mats wherever possible. Too much water or stacking/rolling while wet can lead to mold, mildew and rot.
Are some mats more absorbent than others?
Are some mats more absorbent than others?
Yes and no.
While we trust our mats to serve their intended purpose, it is important to review your specific needs with our mat experts to ensure safe training. For example, if you anticipate a high volume of throws on your mats, we would not recommend a puzzle mat, as they will not provide enough absorption for high impact.
Do I need competition approved mats?
Do I need competition approved mats?
Competition approved mats such as IJF tatami and UWW wrestling mats are only necessary at the National or International level. If these mas are for competition use and you are unsure, please contact your event coordinator. Regular club/gym/school use does not require competition approved mats.
Do I need Hook and Loop connections on my Hatashita Pro Roll roll-out mat?
Do I need Hook and Loop connections on my Hatashita Pro Roll roll-out mat?
Hook and Loop connections function best for mat systems that are permanent or semi-permanent. We do not recommend Hook and Loop connections for systems intended for frequent set up and take down. If your system does not have Hook and Loop connections, Hatashita Mat Tape can be used to secure the seams.
What thickness should I choose?
What thickness should I choose?
The question of thickness comes back to mat type;
Tatami
- 1” - suitable for standup martial arts with minimal take downs
- 1.5” - suitable for all martial arts
Puzzle
- 20mm - suitable for light training, stretching and basic workouts
- 25mm - suitable for standup martial arts with very minimal takedowns
- 40mm - suitable for grappling, rolling, and takedowns
***Note that we do not recommend any puzzle mat for throws. If puzzle mats are the best choice for your gym, condsider a crash mat for training involving throws***
Roll-Out
- Roll out mats are always considered custom products, and as such, we can offer a variety of thicknesses based on your needs. Ask our mat experts about which thickness may best suit your needs
Are these mats waterproof?
Are these mats waterproof?
No, gym mats, while considered water-resistant, are not waterproof. Always avoid excess moisture on your mats wherever possible. Too much water or stacking/rolling while wet can lead to mold, mildew and rot.
What led to the transition from hardwood floors to modern martial arts mats?
What led to the transition from hardwood floors to modern martial arts mats?
Traditionally, many martial arts, including karate, were practiced on hardwood floors. This practice provided a firm, stable surface but lacked cushioning, making falls and intense training sessions more hazardous.
Over time, the need for safer, more comfortable training environments led to the development of specialized mats.
